Yala vs Wilpattu: which safari fits your route?

By Serendip Unfolded · Editorial update 24 Oct 2026. General planning guidance based on our proposed routes.

Short answer: Choose Yala if you are travelling along the south-east and want leopard habitat near the coast. Choose Wilpattu if you are around Anuradhapura and prefer a large forest park with natural villu lakes. Neither park can guarantee a particular animal.

Yala: dry-zone scenery in the south-east

Yala combines leopard habitat, elephants, spotted deer, birds and varied dry-zone scenery. Pickups are usually from Tissamaharama, Kirinda or Yala-area properties.

Leopard sightings are possible but never guaranteed. Good guides avoid crowding animals or racing other jeeps.

Wilpattu: forest and villu lakes in the north-west

Wilpattu's broad area rewards patient wildlife viewing, with forest, natural lakes, birds and elusive mammals such as leopard and sloth bear.

Plan substantial access and internal drive time.

Which one for you?

Let your route decide. Yala sits naturally on a south-coast itinerary, Wilpattu on an itinerary through Anuradhapura. If you want, ask us to compare the two for your dates.
