Mirissa vs Weligama: beach relaxation or surfing?

By Serendip Unfolded · Editorial update 24 Oct 2026. General planning guidance based on our proposed routes.

Short answer: Mirissa suits a relaxed beach day and, in season, optional whale watching with licensed operators. Weligama suits beginner surf lessons with vetted instructors. They are close enough to combine in one day.

Mirissa

A golden-beach morning, a local lunch and a sunset viewpoint. A whale-watching option is separate and seasonal, and sightings are not guaranteed.

Weligama

A sheltered bay that suits beginner lessons with qualified instructors. Surf, swim and boat activities depend on sea conditions and safety advice.

Season

South-coast seas are generally more favourable from November to April, but weather can change.
